Roses

"Um, Londo, these came for you while you were out," Vir mumbled in his usual nervous way.

Londo blinked at the large bundle of red... what were they called? Roses? Ah, yes, roses, the humans grew them on their home world. They weren't nearly as beautiful as some of the other flowers he'd encountered, like star laces, but he supposed they had their charm.

"What did you say?" Londo asked, finally realizing that Vir had said something to him. Maybe he'd had too much to drink after all. Still, it WAS after noon, so it was alright to be a little tipsy.

"These flowers, someone had them delivered," Vir said, shoving them at Londo.

"Why would anyone deliver flowers to me?" Londo asked, taking them and holding them at arms' length suspiciously. "They must be poison."

"Maybe you should read the card," Vir said, indicating the small folded bit of paper hanging from the paper that was wrapped around the bouquet.

"I'm not stupid, Vir!" Londo dropped the roses onto a chair with a look of disgust. "I'm telling you, they're poison! There's no other explination for it!"

"M-maybe one of your wives sent them," Vir said with a nervous grin.

"Like I said," Londo said flatly, "they're dangerous poison."

"Ah, y-yes," Vir said, nodding quickly. "I suppose you're right."

"So, find a human! I want to know what kind of horrible disease you're going to get from touching them!"

Vir's eyes widened and he nodded, quickly scuttling across the floor to the front door. It whooshed open, and he stuck his head out into the hallway, peering about. "Ah! Mr. Garibaldi!" Vir shouted. "Please, come here!"

Garibaldi entered Londo's apartment with a wary look, glancing around quickly for any threats before relaxing. He was always far too suspicious. Londo liked that about him.

"Garibaldi!" Londo smiled widely and approached the other man with his arms out. "Just the man I wanted to see!"

Michael frowned at the alien suspiciously. "Yeah? Why's that?"

"Ah, I seem to have come upon an assasination attempt! Yes, yes, I know, it's hard to believe that someone would want to end my life, but here it is!" Londo gestured grandly at the roses, missing Garibaldi's eye-roll. "I was hoping you could explain to Vir how exactly he was going to die, since he handled them for so long."

Vir squeaked and paled even more dramatically.

"Uh... Londo, those are roses," Michael said, walking over to the chair where the roses had been tossed and picked them up. He held them to his face and inhaled deeply. "Pretty good ones, too."

Londo's eyes narrowed. "So? What kind of poison do they contain?!"

"Poison? Uh, Londo, they're just roses. They aren't poisonous. They're just flowers." Garibaldi shook his head and walked over to the small kitchenette and filled a discarded wine bottle with water, and unwrapped the flowers carefully. "Usually they're symbols of love, though, so I don't know why YOU'D get them."

Londo scowled at Garibaldi as the other man unwrapped the roses and placed them in the water. "Clearly you've underestimated my popularity with women!" Londo walked up to the counter and snatched the card up, opening it. "This is probably from some young vixen, who-" Londo suddenly stopped speaking and froze, mouth agape.

"Londo? Um, are you alright?" Vir asked, poking him in the arm. "Maybe it was poisoned!" Vir looked at Garibaldi nervously.

Arching an eyebrow, Garibaldi snatched the card from Londo's hand. "Let's see here-"

"No!" Londo shouted, coming back to himself suddenly. He lunged at Garibaldi, red in the face. "Don't!"

Garibaldi smirked and stepped behind the counter to slow Londo down and opened the card. His eyes widened and he started laughing so hard he could barely speak. All he could get out was "G'kar?!"

Londo snarled at Garibaldi, fisting his hands on the counter and glaring at him with a look that could kill. "You see?! It must be some sort of threat!"

Garibaldi was laughing too hard to say anything else and leaned back against the wall, shaking his head.

The violence that ensued landed both Londo and Garibaldi in the med lab with abrasions and superficial cuts.

At that afternoon's meeting of the Unaligned Worlds, Londo was decidedly absent. G'kar approached Delenn after the meeting disbanded, looking quite smug. "Ah, it appears that Londo wasn't available today."

Delen frowned in concern. "It seems that he and Mr. Garibaldi got into some sort of argument."

"Mm," G'kar said, looking pleased. "It seems that my little gift worked out just as I planned!"

"Gift?" Delen asked, cocking her head. "Did you send Londo something?"

"Ah, yes, quite the perfect present, if I do say so myself!" G'kar chuckled. "I sent him a flower the Earthers call 'roses.' The vendor assured me that they're considered a terrible bad-luck sign." Smirking, G'kar rubbed his hands together evily.

Delen's eyebrows arched and she nodded. "Ah, I see. That's quite... interesting." Struggling not to laugh, Delen turned and walked away towards her quarters. Lennir met her in the hall to escort her.

"Did something amusing happen at the meeting?" Lennir asked, wondering what could be making Delen make that face.

"Oh, it seems G'kar sent Londo roses," she said, barely holding back giggles.

Lennir's eyes widened. "Aren't those flowers the symbol of love to the humans?"

"Yes, Lennir, although I'm not sure G'kar knew that," Delen said, giving him a mischevious look.

"But Londo doesn't know that he doesn't know... does he?" Lennir asked, looking mildly horrified.

"No," Delen said, pleased. "But who knows what this will lead to. We may see peace between their races after all."
